Lesson No. 1: “Unlearning not to fight”. This year, the Collectif Marthe (Clara Bonnet, Marie-Ange Gagnaux, Aurélia Lüscher and Itto Mehdaoui) is raising the flag of feminist self-defence at the Manège Fonck.

At the heart of the long-awaited Tiens ta garde is Elsa Dorlin's philosophical work: Self-defence, a philosophy of violence, published in 2017. The French philosopher and lecturer at the Paris VIII University sets out a genealogy of self-defence through different political movements, historical periods, and groups of individuals involved in resistance movements. And it shines a light on several fundamental questions: who can legitimately use violence? To what end, and with what means?

Armed with theoretical writings and field analyses, the women from Marthe intertwine their intimate stories with those of great rebel figures to ferociously and explosively bring down clichés about femininity, bring to light the path from fear to rage and create a gallery of critical portraits of oppressors that are fanciful, but without concessions. And, above all, to rewrite history from the point of view of oppressed bodies.

With the Collectif Marthe, the stage becomes a place of limitless possibilities. And we firmly believe that if life is a fight, self-defence is a necessary art, and theatre is a combat sport.
